Jim Leo, one of our honorary firefighters, and the Department's photographer passed away August 13, 2008. Jim went in for open heart surgery on Tuesday to have a single bypass and valve replacement. The doctors discovered the need to replace an additional valve and spent 7 hours working to repair the heart damage. Jim Leo will be greatly missed. Through his photography, he has documented many of our major fires while working as a staff photographer with the Herald. Even after his retirement, Jim's commitment, dedication and service to the Department was tireless. James Allen Leo was born in Everett, Washington, on June 3, 1935, and has dedicated his adult life to the photographic recording of Snohomish County's emergency events. His association with the Herald newspaper began in 1950 when he served as a Herald carrier in North Everett. He advanced steadily from mail room to clerk into the circulation department and finally, in 1959, to photographer. Since the purchase of his first fire and police band radio in 1956, Leo has been witness and photographic scribe to almost every major emergency event involving the Everett Fire Department. Moreover, his interest has gone beyond the sensational to include those moments of sadness in loss and pride in achievement that have also marked the passage of time for the members of the Fire Department. He has been an honorary Everett firefighter since 1966 and, long prior to that, a friend. Photographs by Jim Leo have received awards from the Associated Press, Sigma Delta Chi, Look magazine and the National Press Photographer's Association. Jim lives in Everett with his wife of twenty-eight plus years, Connie Rae. They have a daughter, Lori, and a son, Jeff, who has begun to follow in Jim's footsteps. The Everett Fire Department owes a tremendous debt of thanks to Jim Leo.
